The Castle's History
The Fürstlich Drehna Water Castle is a historic moated castle in Brandenburg, Germany, located in the southern part of the state within the town of Luckau. The castle has a rich history dating back to the 14th century, serving as the seat of the Drehna lordship. Originally comprising three separate buildings, the castle was unified and expanded over the centuries, particularly during the Renaissance. Significant architectural features include a decorative gable, a four-wing complex, and various vaults within the interior.
The castle was heavily damaged during the Thirty Years' War and underwent several phases of restoration, particularly in the late 17th century and after being acquired by the Counts of Promnitz in 1697. In the 19th century, the castle changed ownership multiple times, leading to further interior modifications.
After World War II, the castle was expropriated and repurposed during the GDR era before being left vacant in 1986. It was restored between 1994 and 2007 and subsequently converted into a hotel. In 2024, the castle was sold to a new owner from Potsdam.
The castle park was likely designed by Peter Joseph Lenné in 1807 and later transformed into a landscape park. Parts of the park were lost to lignite mining in the late 20th century, but the inner park remains, featuring a cast-iron pavilion installed in 1992. In 2024, the Schloss Drehna was acquired by the German Deep Tech Group.
